Skin Cancer Basics

Early detection is key to preventing and treating skin cancer effectively. Our dermatology experts diagnose and treat all types of skin cancer, from common basal and squamous cell carcinomas to more serious melanomas. Learn how to protect your skin, recognize warning signs, and explore treatment options for healthier skin.

Types of Skin Cancer

Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)

The most common type, appearing as a pearly or scaly pink bump. Grows slowly and is highly treatable if caught early

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)

Often presents as thickened, crusted, or scaly bumps that don’t heal. Can spread if left untreated.

Malignant Melanoma

The most serious type, developing from abnormal moles that change in size, color, or shape. Early detection is crucial.

Early Detection & Self-Exams

Use the ABCDE rule to check for Melanoma

  • A – Asymmetry: One half looks different from the other.

  • B – Border: Irregular, scalloped, or poorly defined edges.

  • C – Color: Multiple shades of brown, black, red, white, or blue.

  • D – Diameter: Larger than 6mm (size of a pencil eraser).

  • E – Evolving: Changes in size, shape, or color over time.

How to Perform a Skin Cancer Self-Check

  • Examine your body in a full-length mirror.

  • Check hard-to-see areas like the scalp, back, and behind the ears with a hand mirror.

  • Monitor any moles or skin changes and track them with a body mole map.
